Copilot for Finance Preview

June 20, 2025MicrosoftAI

Microsoft's Copilot for Finance is in preview, and we got a demo through our D365 vendor engagement. Here's what it does, what it doesn't do, and whether it's ready for serious consideration.

Copilot for Finance Preview

What Copilot for Finance Does

The positioning is "AI assistant for finance professionals." It integrates with Excel and Microsoft 365 to help with financial analysis, reporting, and reconciliation tasks.

Key scenarios demoed:

Variance analysis: Point Copilot at a financial report and ask "why is revenue down in the Northeast region?" It analyzes the data and provides a narrative explanation with supporting detail. Useful for preparing explanations without manual data digging.

Collections support: Identify overdue accounts, draft collection communications, track customer payment patterns. The draft communication feature could save time for AR teams sending similar messages repeatedly.

Reconciliation assistance: Similar to the D365 F&O built-in reconciliation features, but accessible from Excel. Match transactions, flag exceptions, propose resolutions.

What It Doesn't Do

This isn't an autonomous finance agent. It doesn't book entries, approve payments, or make financial decisions. It's an assistant that helps humans work faster on analysis and communication tasks.

It requires good data. If your ERP data is inconsistent or your chart of accounts is a mess, Copilot's analysis will be confusing or wrong. AI amplifies the quality of your underlying data, for better or worse.

It's preview quality. The demos were controlled scenarios. Production environments with messy data, edge cases, and user variation will be different. Microsoft explicitly says not to use for production financial decisions yet.

Licensing and Availability

Copilot for Finance requires Microsoft 365 Copilot licenses plus additional role-based licensing. It's not cheap - this is a premium capability for knowledge workers, not a mass deployment feature.

Preview is available now. General availability is planned for later this year. We'll evaluate more seriously once it's GA and we have D365 in production.

Our Take

Interesting capability for finance teams who spend significant time on analysis and communication tasks. Not transformational at this stage, but the direction is right. Worth monitoring as it matures.

For our finance team of 6 people, the current licensing cost is hard to justify until the capabilities are more proven. But for larger finance organizations? The time savings on variance analysis alone could pay for the licenses.
