ORBIE Win - What It Means

May 2, 2025LeadershipAwards

I've been named a finalist for the PhillyCIO ORBIE Awards. The final ceremony is in October, so I don't know the outcome yet, but being nominated is already meaningful. Here's what this recognition represents and doesn't represent.

ORBIE Win

What the ORBIE Measures

The ORBIE Awards recognize CIO leadership, not just technology implementation. The evaluation considers business impact, innovation, team development, and industry leadership. It's peer recognition - the selection committee is other CIOs who understand what this work actually involves.

The nomination was based on our work at Julius Silvert: the Adobe Commerce implementation that's transforming our B2B customer experience, the cybersecurity posture improvements, the ERP modernization initiative, and the operational technology investments in fleet and warehouse management.

But more than any single project, it's about the cumulative impact of technology leadership on a $110M food distribution company. Taking a business that ran on legacy systems and manual processes and building a platform for growth.

What It Doesn't Mean

Awards can inflate egos if you let them. This nomination doesn't mean I'm the smartest CIO in Philadelphia. It doesn't mean our technology is perfect. It doesn't mean the hard work is done.

We still have an ERP migration to execute. We still have technical debt to address. We still have skills gaps on the team. The nomination is recognition of progress, not completion.

The Team Aspect

Every CIO success is a team success. The Adobe Commerce work was led by a developer who understood both platforms deeply. The security improvements were driven by an analyst who pushed us toward better practices. The operational technology investments came from operations leaders who saw the potential.

My job is strategy, stakeholder management, and creating conditions for the team to succeed. When those conditions are right, talented people do amazing work. The ORBIE nomination is recognition of what we've built together.

The PhillyCIO Community

Being part of this community matters. The peer connections, the shared learning, the mutual support - these make me a better technology leader. The nomination is partly recognition of that engagement, not just individual achievement.

October finals will determine the outcome. Win or not, the process has been valuable reflection on what we've accomplished and what remains to be done.
