MS Business Apps Launch Event

Microsoft held their Business Applications Launch Event this week, officially releasing the 2025 Wave 1 features for Dynamics 365 and Power Platform. I watched the livestream and talked to our Microsoft contacts. Here's what actually matters versus what's marketing.

The Agent Push

Microsoft is going all-in on AI agents. Every product demo featured agents that can execute tasks, make decisions, and work alongside humans. The Sales Order Agent in Business Central. The Supplier Communication Agent in Supply Chain. Financial agents that do reconciliation.

Reality check: These are genuinely interesting capabilities, but they're early. The demos were controlled scenarios with clean data. Production environments with messy data, edge cases, and exception handling are different. I'm excited about where this goes but not betting production processes on it yet.

D365 Finance & Operations Updates

The features relevant to our evaluation:

Copilot-first experiences in Finance for tax compliance and account reconciliation. The demo showed natural language queries against financial data. "Show me invoices over $10K that are past due" returns an actionable list. That's useful for finance teams who don't want to build reports for every question.

Supply Chain Management enhancements for demand planning. Better integration with external demand signals, which matters for food distribution where demand can be volatile. The question is whether it integrates with our existing forecasting approaches or requires a process change.

Warehouse management mobile app improvements. The UX updates look solid. For organizations using D365 warehouse management natively (not us - we're keeping BFC Dakota), this is meaningful.

Power Platform Updates

Copilot Studio continues to mature. The ability to build agents that can take actions (not just answer questions) is the key evolution. But governance for agentic capabilities is still being figured out. How do you audit what an agent decided? How do you prevent agents from making mistakes at scale?

Dataverse performance improvements were mentioned but not detailed. The storage cost issue didn't get addressed directly, which tells me the pricing model isn't changing soon.

My Take

Microsoft is positioning Dynamics 365 and Power Platform as AI-first platforms. That's the right strategic direction. But they're ahead of most customers' readiness. The organizations that will benefit most from these capabilities are the ones with clean data, well-defined processes, and governance maturity. That's not most organizations.

For our ERP selection, the Wave 1 features reinforce that D365 is on a trajectory we like. The question remains whether we can implement successfully and mature our organization alongside the platform capabilities.
