D365 2025 Wave 1 - What Matters

Wave 1 features are now generally available in D365 F&O. After seeing the launch event and talking with vendors, here's my practical assessment of what matters for mid-market food distribution.

Finance Capabilities

The AI-assisted account reconciliation is genuinely useful. It's not replacing accountants, but it's handling the tedious matching work that used to consume hours. Upload bank statements, let the system propose matches, review and approve exceptions. That workflow makes sense.

Tax management improvements for complex multi-jurisdiction scenarios got attention. For companies with operations across many states or countries, this matters. For us with operations in PA, NJ, and MD, it's nice but not transformational.

Supply Chain Capabilities

Demand planning enhancements with event and promotion forecasting. If you're running promotions that spike demand (we do, occasionally), the system can factor those in. Previous versions could do this manually, but the automation is helpful.

The Supplier Communication Agent preview is interesting. Automated vendor inquiries about order status, lead time changes, price confirmations. Our purchasing team spends significant time on this communication. If the agent can handle routine inquiries reliably, that's real time savings.

Quality management improvements for sample handling. This is relevant for food operations with QC requirements. The previous workflow for holding inventory pending quality approval was clunky. The updates streamline it.

Integration and Platform

The Dataverse Model Context Protocol (MCP) is infrastructure for agentic capabilities. Not something we'll use directly, but it enables the agent scenarios Microsoft is pushing. Foundation work.

Power BI integration continues to improve. The semantic models that let you query ERP data naturally are mature. Our planned analytics architecture assumes heavy Power BI use, so ongoing investment here is good.

What's Missing

Implementation simplification didn't happen. Standing up D365 F&O environments still requires understanding Lifecycle Services, deployment pipelines, and Microsoft's DevOps approach. The learning curve for IT teams is significant.

Catch weight functionality is stable but didn't get major enhancements. For food distribution, this is a mature area that doesn't need major changes, but I was hoping for workflow improvements.

Integration with third-party WMS (like our BFC Dakota) isn't dramatically better. The integration points exist, but building robust real-time integration still requires work.

Implementation Implications

For our project, Wave 1 features don't change the timeline or approach. The new capabilities are nice-to-have additions to a platform we're selecting primarily for its core ERP functionality. We'll implement the basics first and adopt AI features as they mature and as our organization is ready for them.

The vendors we're working with are already familiar with Wave 1 and building it into their demo environments. Final selection happens next month with these features included in the evaluation.
