One year ago I joined Julius Silvert as CIO. It's been a year of assessment, foundation-building, and strategic planning. Here's what we accomplished.
The Starting Point
When I arrived, I found a functional but dated IT environment. S2K ERP running operations reliably but inflexibly. Infrastructure approaching end-of-life. Security practices that needed modernization. A capable team that hadn't been given room to grow.
The first 90 days were about listening and learning. Understanding the business. Building relationships. Identifying quick wins and long-term opportunities.
What We Accomplished
Security improvements: Deployed MFA across all systems. Implemented EDR. Upgraded our backup strategy with air-gapped copies. Conducted our first tabletop exercise.
Infrastructure updates: Refreshed core network switches. Upgraded WiFi in both warehouses. Improved internet redundancy. Standardized endpoint management.
Team development: Every team member got professional development budget. Two promotions from within. Zero unplanned departures. Built trust through transparency.
Process improvements: Documented IT procedures that existed only in people's heads. Implemented change management. Created service catalog.
What Didn't Work
Tried to move too fast on some initiatives. The organization has a pace, and pushing against it creates resistance. Learned to plant seeds and let them grow rather than forcing timelines.
Looking Ahead
2024 will be about ERP modernization planning. S2K has served us well, but it's time to evaluate modern alternatives. Big project, significant investment, transformational opportunity.
Year one was about foundation. Year two is about building.
