We're in change freeze. From December 15 through January 2, no non-emergency changes to production systems. Here's why this matters for food distribution.
Peak Season Reality
December is our busiest month. Holiday orders spike. Restaurant customers are slammed. Any system downtime hits harder because there's no slack in the schedule. Trucks need to roll on time every single day.
The worst time to introduce new risk is when you have the least capacity to handle problems. Change freeze removes that risk.
What We Don't Change
During freeze: no ERP updates, no WMS changes, no network modifications, no server patches (except critical security), no new software deployments, no integration changes. If it touches production, it waits.
Exceptions Process
Critical security patches can't wait. Business-critical fixes can't wait. For these, we have an exception process: document the risk, document the rollback plan, get CIO approval, execute with extra caution.
So far this freeze, we've had two exceptions - both security patches. Both completed successfully during off-hours with rollback plans ready.
What We Do Instead
Freeze doesn't mean idle. We use this time for planning, documentation, training, and preparing for January deployments. The work continues; only the production changes pause.
