BFC Dakota WMS Implementation - Our Journey to Modern Warehouse Management

October 27, 2023Steven Singer11 min read

BFC Dakota went live in our Philadelphia warehouse last month. After six months of implementation, we have a modern WMS replacing paper-based processes. Here's how we got here.

BFC Dakota WMS Implementation

Why BFC Dakota

We evaluated several WMS platforms. BFC Dakota won for three reasons: proven food distribution expertise, solid S2K integration, and reasonable total cost of ownership for a mid-market company. It's not the cheapest or the fanciest, but it's the right fit.

The Integration Challenge

S2K remains our ERP. Dakota needs to exchange data constantly - orders, inventory, receiving, shipping. We built SFTP-based integration with 15-minute sync cycles. Not real-time, but fast enough for warehouse operations and simple enough to maintain.

RF Scanning Deployment

Moved from paper pick tickets to Zebra RF scanners. Pickers now scan locations, scan products, confirm quantities. Every transaction captured electronically. Pick accuracy improved immediately - from 97% to 99%+.

Change Management

Warehouse staff had done things the same way for 20 years. Introducing scanners required patience, training, and support. We ran parallel operations for two weeks. Champions in each shift helped their colleagues adapt.

Early Results

One month post go-live: pick accuracy 99.2%, cycle count accuracy improved dramatically, receiving speed increased 30%. Still optimizing, still learning, but the foundation is solid.
